NORTHRAIL - SOUTHRAIL LINKAGE PROJECT
PROJECT BRIEF
General Project Description
The Northrail-Southrail Linkage Project is a joint undertaking of the Philippines and Korea that aims to develop a modern railway system towards the south of Manila. It also seeks to link the north of Manila from Caloocan, to the south as far as Calamba, Laguna. The project is expected to provide an alternative means of mass transport service that is fast, reliable and affordable.
Total Project Coverage
Caloocan City to Calamba, Laguna
Phase 1 - Caloocan to Alabang, Muntinlupa
To span the 32-km stretch from Caloocan to Alabang, servicing 16 stations along the route. Average travel time from end to end is 30-35 minutes, while twenty-one new diesel railcars are expected to accommodate 187,000 passengers daily.
Project Scope:
- Improvement and upgrading of existing PNR facilities such as railroad tracks, stations, flagstops, level crossings and depot and maintenance facilities
- Repair and reconstruction of existing bridges in Pandacan and Alabang
- Installation of signaling and communication facilities.
Project Cost and Financing:
Phase 1 will cost US$ 50.42 million, 70% or US$ 35 million of which will be funded through a concessional loan from the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) of Korea. The balance will be in the form of export credit from the Korean Export-Import Bank (KOEXIM).
Phase 2 - Alabang to Calamba
Project Scope:
- Double tracking of more than 27 kms.1
- Rehabilitation of existing stations
- Construction of new stations at Pacita and Sta. Rosa
- Repair and reconstruction of 5 bridges in Laguna area
- Supply of railcars
- Provision for signaling and communication
- Road crossing improvements and control
